I met Ralf in his apartment on January 29, 2005. He has just got a package with our new CD 'Rambling Voyage' expected for a long time. We are together pleased about our latest musical 'product'.

Ralf made an exhausted but content impression on me: Just this day he has completed the master of his new solo CD, the result of an intensive four-month work phase. According to his statement this has been the most creative but also most exhausting phase for years for which he, however, also must pay a physical price: He complains of increasing backache and circulatory disorders.

However, for the first time since I know him, Ralf is one hundred per cent satisfied with an own CD... It is my masterpiece, I will call it 'SAME SPACE - DIFFERENT TIME', he says to me as I leave him.

Some hours later Ralf has died with only 44 years of heart-failure.

I think Ralf was a great sound pioneer who could elicit new, surprising tones from his synthesizers again and again and developed his quite characteristic , unique Sound , who has granted him a solid, worldwide fan community.

With Ralf's death the story of HEMISPHERE ends, a 14-year exciting electronic sound journey, which took her beginning 1991 with his first CD 'Liquid Mirror'.

I am grateful that I could accompany him on this journey 8 years; for me he will live on in his music.

HEMISPHERE wurde 1991 von dem Cuxhavener Electronic-Musiker Ralf Knappe-Heinbockel gegründet, gehört inzwischen zu den 'dienstältesten' deutschen Electronic-Gruppen und gilt heute als eine der führenden Deep-Ambient-Gruppen in der internationalen Electronic-Szene.

Ralfs musikalische Wurzeln finden sich bei den deutschen Electronic-Pionieren wie Tangerine Dream und Klaus Schulze.
1991 erscheint die erste CD von HEMISPHERE mit dem Titel 'Liquid Mirror' auf dem Berliner Label Musique Intemporelle, 1992 veröffentlicht Ralf seine zweite CD 'Destination Infinity'.

1993 wechselt HEMISPHERE zu dem holländischen Electronic-Label 'CUE Records NL' von Ron Boots, der auch die folgenden CDs von HEMISPHERE produziert; 1993 erscheint 'Outdoors' und 1995 'Intruders'. Auf vielfachen Wunsch veröffentlicht Ralf 1997 ein Album mit älteren Stücken unter dem Titel 'Early Reflection'.
Inzwischen hat sich HEMISPHERE zu einem Geheimtipp in der deutschen Electronic-Szene entwickelt.

1996 kommt der Cuxhavener Gitarrist und Keyboarder Thorsten Reinhardt zu HEMISPHERE. Sein Interesse an electronischer Musik wurde durch die Ambient Music von Brian Eno und Steve Roach, sowie durch die Minimal Music von Terry Riley und Philipp Glass geweckt.

Es entwickelt sich eine fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit, die erste gemeinsame CD erscheint 1996 unter dem Titel 'Beyond the Darkness' auf dem neuen Label von Ron Boots 'Groove Unlimited'. In den folgenden Jahren erscheinen weitere gemeinsame HEMISPHERE-CDs, die die Gruppe vor allem in den USA und Holland bekannt machen:

1998 kommt die CD 'From Inside the Cyclone' heraus, im Jahre 2000 erscheint 'Inversion', im darauffolgenden Jahr erscheint 'Now'. Mit dieser Veröffentlichung belegt HEMISPHERE bei der 'Schwingungen-Wahl 2001' (laut TAZ der 'Grammy der elektronischen Musik') in der Rubrik 'Beste Electronic-CD des Jahres 2001' den zweiten Platz. Im März 2002 erscheint die zehnte HEMISPHERE-CD 'Attachment X'. Der Hörerkreis erweitert sich mittlerweile insbesondere auch nach Russland und Polen.

HEMISPHERE hat im Laufe der Zeit einen eigenständigen, unverwechselbaren Stil entwickelt, der sich einerseits abhebt von süßlichem elektronischen New-Age-Gesäusel, andererseits aber auch von traditioneller elektronischer Sequenzermusik.

HEMISPHERE kombiniert atonale Klangkollagen (Ralfs Spezialität!) mit harmonischen Synthy-Atmosphären, die mit lebendigen electronischen Grooves und Beats angereichert werden. Gewürzt wird diese Mischung mit originalen Gitarren- und Vocal-Lines. Im eigenen Studio werden diese Zutaten zu den typischen HEMISPHERE-Deep-Ambient-Soundtracks gemastert.

HEMISPHEREs Musik ist hypnotisch und hypnotisierend und stellt eine Art schamanische akustische Reise dar, die in besondere Bereiche der Hörer-Persönlichkeit hineinwirken kann. Die oft dunklen, geheimnisvollen Klangfarben stellen eine besondere Resonanz zu den tiefen, erdigen, vor-bewußten Aspekten unserer Persönlichkeit dar. Diese Musik fördert eine eher meditative Trance, die beim Hörer mit intensiven inneren Bildern verbunden sein kann.

Hemisphere comprised of the German duo of Ralf Knappe-Heinbockel and Thorsten Reinhardt, although Reinhardt did not appear until 1996. Most of their CDs are mastered by Ron Boots.

The music of HEMISPHERE is full of dark, ambient sound structures with sometimes percussion loops and rhythm patterns. Ralf was apparently inspired by Jim Morrison.

Early Reflections (1997) is a compilation of some older live material recorded between 1980 and 1990. In the liner notes they compare their style to Tangerine Dream (Zeit, Atem) and Klaus Schulze (Irrlicht, Cyborg) which seems fairly accurate.

Outdoors (1994) has some rhythmics and is somewhat more progressive and upbeat but it is true to their main theme of choral, symphonic, mysterious, slow enveloping synth and sampling effects.

Beyond the Darkness (1996) has some good melodic passages and even some electric guitar.  It's more progressive and keeps your interest the whole album.

From Inside the Cyclone (1998) has some more rhythm, melody and guitar on 'Zombie' and 'Fool Grooves' but it is true to ambient form for the remainder of the album.  It has the most diversity of any of the releases. 

Because of their unique sound, HEMISPHERE was one of the leading bands in dark ambient music.

'From Inside the Cyclone' was re-released in January 1998 and a 20 bit remaster with bonus tracks) of 'Liquid Mirror' in April 1999.

In March 2000 they released the CD 'Inversion' and in April 2001 'Now'.
'Attachment X' was released in March 2002 and 'Beast in the Heat' in September 2003.
'Rambling Voyage' was released in January 2005 and a re-release of 'Destination Infinity' in May 2006.


Unfortunately this is where the story of Hemisphere ends...
